A collection of textile samples lay spread out on the table – Samsa was a travelling salesman – and above it there hung a picture that he had recently cut out of an illustrated magazine and housed in a nice, gilded frame. It showed a lady fitted out with a fur hat and fur boa who sat upright, raising a heavy fur muff that covered the whole of her lower arm towards the viewer.

Gregor then turned to look out the window at the dull weather. Drops of rain could be heard hitting the pane, which made him feel quite sad. “How about if I sleep a little bit longer and forget all this nonsense”, he thought, but that was something he was unable to do because he was used to sleeping on his right, and in his present state couldn’t get into that position. However hard he threw himself onto his right, he always rolled back to where he was.

The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.

One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin. He lay on his armour-like back, and if he lifted his head a little he could see his brown belly, slightly domed and divided by arches into stiff sections.

Los Angeles, USA | 11 Feb 2019 (Tirana Echo) – Albanian born British pop star Dua Lipa shined at the 61st Grammy Awards last night by getting ‘Best New Artist’ title, beating her class of fellow talented nominees Chloe x Halle, Luke Combs, Greta Van Fleet, H.E.R., Margo Price, Bebe Rexha and Jorja Smith.

This is her second win of the night, after \”Electricity\” won Best Dance Recording, her track with Silk City aka Diplo and Mark Ronson.

\”I want to say thank you to my fans who have allowed me to be the best version of myself,\” Lipa said in accepting the award.

Born in 1995 in London to Albanian parents originally from Kosovo, Dua Lipa\’s breakthrough came in 2016 with her first global hit \”Hotter than Hell,\” which she followed with \”Blow Your Mind (Mwah),\” storming into the US Top 100 Billboard.

Lipa then broke out with her massive hit \”New Rules,\” from her 2017 self-titled debut album, which also features her platinum single \”IDGAF.\”

During her acceptance speech, Lipa made an emotional reference to her background during others to feel special when different from others.

My God I am so nervous, so excited and so grateful. One thing that I really want to say is for anyone who hasn’t realized how special they are to have a different story, a different background, a name that honors their roots because they want to be normal, whatever the hell that means, just know that no matter where you’re from, never let that get on the way of your dreams, because you deserve it.” Lipa concluded by making an emotional reference to her Albanian roots.

Dua Lipa was born on 22 August 1995 in Westminster, London, to Albanian parents. Her father, Dukagjin Lipa, is a marketing manager who had a side gig as a lead vocalist in a Kosovar rock band named Oda and her mother, Anesa Lipa (née Rexha), is a tourism executive. Her parents are from Kosovo and had left Pristina in 1992.

She attended Sylvia Young Theatre School part-time before moving to Kosovo with her family in 2006 when her father had graduated from his studies and been offered a job in Kosovo.

At the age of 14, she began posting covers of her favourite songs by artists such as Pink and Nelly Furtado on YouTube and at the age of 15, she moved back to London with aspirations of becoming a singer.

Lipa lived with a friend and studied at Parliament Hill School, where she finished A-levels in Politics, Psychology, English and Media, returning to the Sylvia Young Theatre School on Saturdays. She began working as a model for the online catalogue ASOS Marketplace when she was 16 and 17. In January 2018, Lipa received nominations in five categories at the Brit Awards – more nominations than any other artist that year. She was nominated for British Female Solo Artist, British Breakthrough Act, MasterCard British Album of the Year for Dua Lipa, British Single of The Year and British Video of The Year for \”New Rules\”.

This was the first time that a female artist had received five nominations. She performed at the awards ceremony held on 21 February at the O2 Arena in London and won the awards for British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act.

Warsaw, Poland | 22 Oct 2018 (Tirana Echo) – Delegacioni (The Delegation), a co-production motion picture by Albania, France, Greece and Kosovo, grabbed the Grand Prix at the 34th Warsaw International Film Festival, in what is seen as a milestone achievement for Albanian cinema.

The movie directed by Albania’s Bujar Alimani and scripted by renowned Artan Minarolli who died in 2015, focuses on events in 1990 Albania, when the country’s iron fisted communist regime was starting to crumble. A European delegation comes to Tirana to monitor the implementation of new reforms by the government, which is trying to hold on to power at all cost .

The main character of the movie, is Leo, a political prisoner played by legendary Viktor Zhusti who refuses to play the regime’s theatrical game. His staged meeting with the delegation’s head Mr. Loherin played by another heavyweight Albanian actor Ndriçim Xhepa, prompts Leo to want to commit suicide, but the turn of events takes another path.

The Warsaw Grand Prix is hailed as a major achievement for Albanian cinema, which has suffered from financial restraints and lack of adequate production during its post communist days. Alimani dedicated this win to the late producer Artan Minarolli whi died in 2015.

Anca Damian of the Romanian/French film Moon Hotel Kabul, collected the prize for best director, while Martina Apostolova took home the Special Jury Award for her performance in the Bulgarian film Irina, directed by Nadejda Koseva. Special Mention went to Mexican director Sergio Umansky Brener for his film Ocho de cada diez (Eight Out of Ten).

The jury of the 1-2 competition, which presented directors\’ first and second feature efforts, gave its award to the Greece/France/Serbia co-production I doulia tis (Her Job), directed by Nikos Labôt.

Out by French filmmaker Denis Parrot was hailed as the winner of the Free Spirit Competition, which focused on independent cinema.

Tirana, Albania, 15 May (Tirana Echo) – Albanian Eurovision fans have been disappointed with the Italian vote at the Grand Final of the European Song Contest in Lisbon after its neighboring country gave Albania’s entry  zero points.

Reactions flooded social networks and media across Albania as Tirana’s jury gave its top 12 points to Italy, only to find out that its Albanian song got zero points in return from Rome. Fan fury was further fueled also by the fact that Italy’s song was performed by an Albanian-born singer Ermal Meta, adding to Albania’s hopes for high points from the Italian jury.

Albania had placed its hopes on singer Eugent Bushpepa and his song “Mall” this year in Lisbon, after selecting the singer by a professional jury during the National Albanian Song Festival. The song was tipped as one of the favorites and it respectfully ended in 11th place. Italy’s “Non mi avette fatto niente” sung by Ermal Meta and Fabrizio Moro got 5th place,  higher than expected by most music critics.

Reacting to the vote after the Grand Final in Lisbon, Italy’s Ermal Meta twitted: “Honestly I didn’t get the 12 points of the Italian jury. I would have given them to Albania. Eugent’s voice and tone were impressing.

Also reacting to the Italian vote, Albania’s singer Eugent Bushpepa said that “the biggest wonder this year was Italy. We thought that having had an Albanian singer in their team, they would have been a bit more generous to us.

Fans were proud that three Albanian-born singers were representing three different countries at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, Albania, Cyprus and Italy.

Speaking after the Grand Final, Cyprus’ phenomenal Albanian-born singer Eleni Foureira who came up second, said she was extremely happy with the 10 points from the Albanian jury.

Next year’s Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Jerusalem after the Israeli song “Toy” sung by Netta won in Lisbon.

Lisbon, Portugal – May 09 (Tirana Echo) – Three Albanian-born singers have stolen the show at the Eurovision semi-final last night, with Albania, Cyprus and Italy all in Saturday’s Grand Final.

Albanian fans were overjoyed last night as three Albanian born singers representing Albania, Cyprus and Italy have now been confirmed for the Grand Final taking place on Saturday night in Lisbon.

Favorite to win is Cyprus with Albanian-born singer Eleni Foureira who rocked the stage last night with her song “Fuego”. Her chances of winning the song contest have gone from 66-1 to 5-2 after the semi-final at Lisbon\’s Altice Arena.

For the first time in twelve years, Albania is sending a male solo artist to the contest, Eugent Bushpepa who was born in 1984 and started singing when he was only six years old. In December 2017, the Albanian national selection ‘Festivali i Këngës’ chose Bushpepa to represent his country at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest with a rock song ‘Mall’ (Longing) , which he wrote and composed himself.

Eugent Bushpepa smashed the stage last night with his high rock voice showing strong vocal skills and a solid performance which gives Albania hope to be in the top ten at the Grand Final.

Italy’s Ermal Meta and Fabrizio Moro come with ‘Non Mi Avete Fatto Niente’ which in English translates as’ You Did Not Do Anything To Me’, and its subject matter is far more serious than you might expect from a Eurovision entry – with lyrics relating to war and terrorism across Europe and the Middle East.

Since ending their 14-year Eurovision exile in 2011, Italy have twice come close to winning the competition – coming second in 2011 and achieving a third place finish in 2015.

This time round they clearly have their sights set on doing even better, and have recruited one of the country’s most successful songwriters, Albanian-born Ermal Meta, to help achieve that goal. Ermal will take to the stage alongside fellow singer-songwriter Fabrizio Moro. Italy goes automatically to the Grand Final as part of the Big 5.

After a thrilling first Semi-Final, the ten ecstatic qualifiers gathered for a press conference to talk about their experience. They also drew from a bowl to find out whether they would perform in the first or second half of the Grand Final on Saturday, the 12th of May.

Cyprus’ Eleni Foureira thanked the audience for all the love and support, and was asked if she is going to make history as Cyprus’ best result in the Eurovision Song Contest – which they reached three times – was 5th place.

I have no idea. I wish I could change that, so I’m going to try and make history. But if I don’t, I’m going to be happy too.” – Eleni said. Cyprus drew to perform in the second half in Saturday\’s Grand Final.

Talking about his performance on the big stage in Lisbon, Albania’s Eugent Bushpepa said: \”As long as you can convey emotions, it’s the same singing either in a small pub or in front of this enormous crowd.

He went on to dedicate the song \”to all the people that I love, it’s about missing the people that you care for the most, so I dedicate it to all Albanians.”Albania drew to perform in the first half in Saturday\’s Grand Final.

The 63rd Eurovision Song Contest is about to take place, for the first time in its history, in Portugal, a country that had a reputation – until last year – as the competition\’s biggest loser.

The Grand Final will feature 26 participants including Portugal (host), the Big-5 (Germany, Spain, France, Italy and United Kingdom), the top 10 from the first semi-final and the top 10 from the second semi-final which takes place on Thursday night.

Following the Albanian national final back in December 2017, which picked the Albanian entry for Lisbon, the shortened and revamped version of the song Mall from Eugent Bushpepa has now been released.

It has been more than 3 months since Festivali i Këngës 56 in Tirana and we can finally listen to the final version of the 2018 Albanian Eurovision entry. Eugent Bushpepa revamped his FiK winning song in Belgium in the past few weeks:

Festivali i Këngës 56

On December 23, Eugent Bushpepa won FiK 56 with the song Mall (beating fan favorite Inis Neziri who came 3rd), earning therefore the right to represent the nation and be the 15th ever Albanian Eurovision act.

After winning the competition, Eugent Bushpepa has been very silent on social media. Who knows what Albania is preparing for Lisbon, but it’s probably going to be really good!

He recently traveled to Portugal to film his postcard.

Albania in Eurovision

Eugent will follow in the footsteps of Lindita who represented the Balkan nation last year in Kyiv with her song World, with which she performed in the first half of the first semi-final, just like Eugent is set to do. Eventually, she didn’t manage to bring Albania to the final, scoring 14th place in the semi-final.

It was recently announced that Danish architect Bjarke Ingels was selected to design the new National Theatre of Albania. For Ingels, who\’s the founder and creative partner of the internationally renowned firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), the news comes on the heels of several recent high-profile commissions (including New York\’s Two World Trade Center). The Danish innovator will be the first high-profile architect to design a public structure in the country.

The lines of the new National Theatre, which is shaped like a prism, become compressed and angled away from the ground as they move toward the center of the building. This allows for a covered atrium in the middle of the venue, where visitors can walk freely under its shade. \”Underneath, the theater arches up from the ground creating an entrance canopy for the audience as well as the performers,\” said Ingels in a statement.

The rooftop follows a similar path, angling downward toward the middle of the building where it connects to create an additional outdoor performance space. To create the building, BIG collaborated with the local architecture firm SON Engineering & Construction, as well as Theatre Projects, a Paris-based group that\’s responsible for some of the most cutting-edge theater designs around the globe. The result culminates in a space that is transparent at both ends, as floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the streets. This effectively allows the public at large to experience rehearsals, set designs, and other elements of the theater that are generally conducted away from the community\’s purview.

The new National Theatre of Albania (which will replace the existing auditorium) will cover a plot of land slightly larger than 86,000 square feet, and will be located adjacent to the iconic Skanderbeg Square, the National Opera, and the National Art Gallery. For Albania, a country that has been a candidate for accession to the European Union since 2014, the BIG-designed building will signal the first time that a high-profile architect has designed a public structure in the country. Indeed, Bjarke Ingels Group has received several awards, such as the 2011 Prix Delarue, French Academy of Architecture, the 2013 Progressive Architecture Award, and the 2016 American Institute of Architects New York Chapter Design Awards.
